My dear Erenan,

Thank you for your letter of 6th Cetober, and for having forwarded to H.B.M. Kinister at Feking our proposal for Military Guards on our shirs.

In regard to the points you mention in connection with the "Anking" piracy, I do not think I can do better than send you a copy of our letter to London dated 5th October, which I now enclose together with Captain Plunkett Cole's Report on the incident.

As you know, the ships are supplied with arms, but the personnel rarely use them now-a-days, considering that to carry them on their persons would invite the pirates to shoot at sight. In the "Anking" incident, it is our opinion » and also that of Captain Plunkett Cole that. had the officers been carrying arms, the pirates would have murdered the Europeans to a RAI.

Yours sincerely,

J. F. Brenan, Esquire, C.M.G..

H. B. M. Consul-General,

Canton.

(Sa) X. 8. Hrown.
